A rectangular-fin type thermoelectric device having a simple module structure suitable for micro fabrication was newly proposed. The power density and conversion efficiency were given theoretically by solving one-dimensional heat and current flows inside the rectangular-fin element. It is found that there exists optimum fin aspect ratio to achieve maximum power density and conversion efficiency. Power density becomes larger when the module is proportionally downsized keeping its optimum fin aspect ratio, while conversion efficiency remains constant. Comparative analysis with conventional pi-type module was also conducted to emphasize the superiority of fin-type module in micro systems to conventional one when convective heat transfer resistance is taken into consideration.
