The effect of Schmidt number on mass transfer across a turbulent gas-liquid interface was investigated by direct numerical simulation (DNS). Employing a Lagrangian method, the gas transfer rates at high Schmidt numbers (Sc = 100, 500, 1000) were calculated. We also carried out Eulerian DNS of both wall turbulence and gas-liquid flow at moderate Schmidt numbers to study the Schmidt number effect on mass transfer in each case. The correlation between velocity and concentration fields is kept unchanged near the free surface, so that the eddy diffusivity for scalar does not largely depend on the Schmidt number even at high Schmidt numbers.
