Experimental study on the structure of beds packed with CaCl{sub}2 reactive solids have been performed in order to clarify its effects on heat transfer. From the porosimetry measurements, two void fractions, bed and pellet void fractions, were obtained. It was found that the void fraction and fine structure of pellets changed due to reaction. Equations to predict the effective thermal conductivities of bed and pellet have been derived by taking account of the bed structure and the pressure dependence of the effective thermal conductivity. The equations satisfactorily described the variations of effective thermal conductivity of reactive solid beds under various conditions.
