A high temperature multi-layer insulation (MLI) thermal blanket is proposed for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Solar Probe near-sun flyby mission. The maximum temperature limit of the thermal blanket is 2,100°C. The thickness of the thermal blanket is only 0.1 to 0.2 mm, which is 100 to 200 times thinner than the carbon-carbon foam insulation currently used. Thus it reduces the volume required to accommodate the thermal insulation and allows more volume for accommodating the spacecraft and instrument flight hardware. It also reduces the heat radiation from the spacecraft and instrument high temperature (up to 2,100°C) surfaces to components that require much colder temperatures. It solves many high temperature thermal radiation problems for the Solar Probe mission.
