The development of commercial laser scanning hardware/software systems, which are specifically designed for the acquisition and analysis of three dimensional (3D) data, now offers innovative tools for the rapid collection, analysis and interpretation of detailed information at complex and hazardous incident scenes. This paper reviews TRL's use of 3D laser scanning systems at major incident scenes and around sensitive infrastructure, briefly identifying the applications and potential benefits. The experiences of TRL's investigators with laser scanning equipment has also helped to identify several areas in which laser scanning technology/techniques could assist the police and security services in contingency planning, automatic object detection and the preservation, investigation and management of security related incidents. This paper discusses the practical application of laser scanning techniques in terms of: operational issues; comparison with existing methods of data collection; the potential benefits of laser scanning; considerations in its use and other applications for technology in transport and infrastructure related fields.
