Flexible, capable of a wide range of properties, precipitation hardenable, readily understood metallurgical system - all these describe the copper nickel silicon base alloy system. Today over 32 copper nickel silicon based alloys are advertised by more than 15 companies worldwide. Such an environment at first glance would suggest many unique property sets and capabilities. In fact, in this environment a jungle has grown. One where many material selection paths lead to similar design results - on paper. Yet sometimes impassable when multiple sources are required, and even more dangerous when global standards are required to be developed and consistent seamless performance is expected from lot to lot and tool to tool. We hope to guide you through this jungle and conclude with recommendations on a reasonable number of copper nickel silicon alloys that should be considered "global standards for interconnect design".
