A forest fire that occurred on April 7, 2000, was the worst forest fire crisis in South Korea's history. Because the fire occurred just before the rainy season, immediate restoration works were essential. Lonseng bags, plank-board barriers and gabionstructures were used as temporary restoration methods; Steel Frame Type Erosion Control Dams (SEC) were employed as permanent soil erosion control structures. In previous research, only seven SEC dams had been constructed. With the development of a design program and the establishment of standard manufacturing and construction methods, 13 SEC dams were designed and constructed in only 40 days. With high water permeability and filtering action, the SEC dams were the perfect solution to addressing the environmental pollution from ashladen runoff water.
