摘要

To design a facility for entrepreneurial management requires unprecedented ideas, to create an environmental friendly building for such a facility in desert requires extraordinary courage. The unique and extreme climatic condition in desert presents constrains and challenges for architects and designers to overcome the harsh environment. The design of the Heckmann Center is derived from natural principles of desert environment and the historical and indigenous examples from native habitants. Passive cooling strategies that based on natural elements of sun, wind, water and earth are weaved into the design concepts of this conference center in Palm Desert, California. The natural environmental system deployed in the architecture are evaporative cooling, thermal mass, night sky irradiative cooling, and cross natural ventilation. Through careful construction details and design development, these concepts are developed and integrated into the entire building systems of the Heckmann center. Results of this innovative design are expected to benefit from both initial cost and operating energy reduction in addition to a more sustainable and productive living environment.
