In todays deregulated and highly competitive power and energy industry, up-to-date and easily accessible information about transmission/distribution assets and customers is critical. This information is most useful in electronic format for use across the organization and for integrating with new analytical tools. Automated mapping/facilities management (AM/FM) is one such tool now in use and being developed by BPA's geographic information system (GIS) department. An integrated AM/FM/GIS provides BPA with very powerful analytical capabilities for future line design, operation and maintenance, metering, customer marketing analysis, environmental analysis, and hazardous waste management. Future non-transmission applications may include power sales and marketing, distributed generation mapping, energy conservation analysis, project inspection, power factor and power quality monitoring, metering, and a host of other uses.
