Boundary element analysis of rib-stiffened elastic plates

The boundary element method has been applied to the static bending problem of eccentrically stiffened elastic plates. Five components of interactive loads are directly treated as unknowns in the formulation. A coupled problem due to the eccentricity of stiffeners are formulated in terms of boundary integral equations, where in- and out-of-plane deformation of plates, and bending, torsion and tension deformation are considered. Numerical results for a eccentrically stiffened plates were obtained and compared with the solution by the finite element method. Good agreement was recognized, and it is noted that in the proposed method quite meaningful boundary conditions can be used. As future work, we may recommend extensions of the proposed solution procedure to the buckling or dynamic problem. For a general case, plates stiffened by ribs of open cross section may be taken into account. The treatment of interactive loads will not change in these extensions.
