A Sense of Time and the Historical Context for Landscape Design: Conservation activities depend first on clearly defining the goals. Whatever those goals are, some form of habitat conservation is likely to be included, as habitat loss is the greatestof all threats to insects (Mawdsley and Stork, 1995). In turn, protecting and restoring habitats depends on managing whole landscapes, or countryside-wide management (Ricketts et al., 2001). When visualizing the landscape to be conserved, it is essentialto have a historical perspective, so as to conserve for when, as well as for what against a background of ever-changing landscapes. Although Lockwood (2001) has rightly argued for a sense of place in insect conservation, a parallel concept is also thatof time.
