Dynamic response of bar embedded in poroelastic halfspace under lateral excitations

The dynamic response of bar (pile) has been a subject of extensive investigations during the past few decades. Several researchers have developed a variety of numerical and analytical methods to compute the dynamic response of the bar in an elastic medium. A comprehensive review on the subject has been presented by Novak [1]. It is worth mentioning that, although many problems involving dynamic response of bar in elastic medium have been studied, the solutions for dynamic response of bar in poroelastic half space are rather limited. According to the writer's knowledge, Zeng and Rajapakse [2] presented only theoretical studies dealing with the application of Biot's theory [3] for analysis of the vertical dynamic response of a bar in a poroelastic half space under vertical loading, and no previous study considered the dynamic response of a bar in a poroelastic half space under lateral loadings. It is therefore important to examine the lateral dynamic response of a bar within the framework of Biot's theory, and to determine the influence of poroelastic effects. The main objective of this paper is to study this problem.
