Rupture of the abdominal aorta is the 10th largest killer among seniors in western countries. The rupture occurs after a dilation of the aorta in the abdominal region which forms what is called an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA). Current treatment methods are surgical interventions which are decided based on the aneurysm size or its growth rate. Accelerating blood flow through the abdominal region has been hypothesized to limit thrombus formation in the AAA and as a potential consequence to reduce AAA growth rate. The change of the body posture has a substantial effect on the blood flow rate in the abdominal region which may be in favor of accelerating the blood flow rate. In this study, the effect of a regular change from sitting to standing on AAAs flow field will be experimentally investigated using time-resolved particle image velocimetry.
