This paper presents an approach to improve machine tool accuracy for boring by high speed orbital milling. A series of tests is used to investigate the dominant errors affecting accuracy at different feed rates and hole radii for a machine-tool with ball screw feed-drive systems. Results show that backlash, reversal spikes and radius size errors are the important sources of error which affect contouring accuracy of the tested machine. Based on circular path tests and simple dynamic model identification, the radius size error is predicted and compensated. Furthermore, backlash and reversal spikes were compensated by fine tuning the existing controller compensation.
