Beneficial Uses of Dredged Material: Introduction to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Website

As part of the efforts in the U.S. to consider dredged material as a resource and to increase beneficial use of dredged material, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (with support from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) developed a website to promote beneficial use of dredged material. The objectives of the website are to provide details and logistics of completed beneficial use projects throughout the U.S., offer links to guidance documents pertaining to beneficial use planning, and track trends for the total number of beneficial use projects completed per year and the volume of dredged material used beneficially per year. While this database will be a useful resource of project examples for potential dredged material management alternatives, a number of challenges have surfaced with regard to identifying the total number of beneficial use projects and volume of dredged material used beneficially per year.
