Regulation Dredging of the Grand Canal (Jiangsu Section)

Following liberation in the 1950s the new government paid greater attention to canal shipping and launched on a renovation programme of dredging. As a result the ancient Grand Canal has irradiated the vigor of its youth and the annual amount of cargo shipped on canal increased rapidly. As a critical artery for Jiangsu shipping the Grand Canal plays an active promotion and development of the Jiangshu economy. A series of historical facts are enumerated for illustrating that dredging engineering can produce good economical and social benefits and can also promote an increase in canal shipping. The beneficial use of dredged mud and the measures for solving difficult disposal problems are introduced. The application of different machinery and the adoption of different construction methods for the various soils during the construction for flood drainage, irrigation, improvements, environmental improvement to waterways and dredging.
