In June 2001, the Municipality of Jaunay-Clan in central France (Vienne Dept.) officially inaugurated its new drinking water treatment facility that has been designed, built, and installed by Eurodia Industrie (Wissous, France). This municipality of 5,000 inhabitants is pumping groundwater with too high a hardness level for distribution (see example of analysis in Table 1). Eurodia offered a purification system based on its unique electrodialysis technology to simultaneously reduce the hardness by ~40 % and the nitrate level by ~70 %. This electrodialysis process was in competition with traditional techniques such as chemical precipitation: still, the order was received in October 2000 because of attractive costs and a significantly lower wastewater volume. Three EUR40B-700 stacks with a total of 840 m{sup}2 (9,041 ft{sup}2) of effective cell area were installed to produce 163 m{sup}3/h (718 gpm) of drinking water. The overall water recovery is higher than 95 %.
