A complete characterization of the optical, chemical and physical attributes of pigments based on multi-layer structures has been carried out using a variety of analytical instruments. In particular, a microspectrophotometer was used to measure the optical properties of a single particle. A state-of-the-art goniospectrophotometer was the basis for measuring at various angles the color properties of the pigment in a coating. The particle size distribution of the pigment was determined from measurements taken on a laser-based particle analyzer, and the composition of the pigment was determined using a portable XRF system.
