A two-dimension finite element model is used to predict surface and subsurface settlements due to new tunnelling operations for single and twin tunnels using the gap parameter method. A parametric study performed for a single tunnel indicated that the main controlling parameter is the amount of volume loss. The shape of the excavated hole would have significant effect only when the shape is strongly distorted. The maximum settlement is also affected by the dilatancy angle during the drained analysisthough its effect is much smaller than that of the amount of volume loss.
