In this study, a model-based fault diagnosis approach of a beam is proposed. The distinguishing feature of the method is to construct a mathematical model considering the uncertainty of any elements in the structure. The mathematical model with uncertainty is constructed as an updated model with standard deviations of some elements in the structure. In the estimation of the location of abnormality, the objective function to identify the location of abnormality is defined with uncertainty. After that the cause of abnormality and its degree are identified. The feasibility of the proposed method is checked using the experimental data of a free-free uniform beam excited at the center. As a result, the location of abnormality can be identified based on the mean value and the standard deviation of the objective function, and the cause of abnormality can also be determined by using the proposed method. Using the proposed method is a feasible way to diagnose the practical structure.
