In this paper, a single-phase PWM rectifier with power factor correction (PFC) is analyzed under a high power application. Special attention is dedicated to the RMS current and voltage ripple through the output filter capacitor, a metallized polypropylene film capacitor (MPPF capacitor), considering different input filter inductance values. The resultant lifetime expectancy of the capacitor is obtained through the combination of analytical and numerical models. The output filter capacitor RMS current, the voltage on it, and the total harmonic distortion of the input current (THD_I) are evaluated through numerical solutions of the whole system, including a simplified model for the MPPF capacitor and taking into account only resistive loads. Results are obtained through simulations developed in the MATLAB/Simulink environment.
