Hood Vibration Measurements and Perception

As the automotive industry continues efforts to minimize weight within key components, these efforts must be confirmed to not cause negative side effects that worsen customer experiences. One of the potential side effects of light-weighting of an automotive hood can be increased instances of hood vibration, particularly at higher speeds, when passing an oncoming vehicle, or during key road input events. Unwanted hood vibrations can cause negative effects on customer perception, potentially effecting the perceived quality, and possibly providing a distraction during driving. Within this paper various measurement methods and data analysis options are discussed in relation to the subjective perceptions. Both operational data as well as static assessments are explored to identify key criteria and objective measures that can be linked to design criteria, and ultimately related back to effects on subjective impressions to ensure a positive experience is delivered to end customers.
