Sampling of Tonal Noise Issues in Communities

Industrial, commercial, and institutional facilities produce a variety of sounds in their surrounding communities, which can result in noise complaints and pressure for corrective action. For example, sounds may be broadband from a wet cooling tower waterfall, low frequency from an idling locomotive, impulsive from a punch press, speech from a PA system, tonal from a transformer, or some combination such as broadband, low frequency, and tonal from a large fan. A significant number of community noise problems on which these authors have provided consulting have been tonal in nature and have employed narrow band and other methods of analysis. This paper summarizes pertinent details from a sampling of tonal noise issues and discusses the investigation, evaluation, and resolution of each case.
