Application and Operation of the Shell Low Temperature SCR Technology on Ethylene Cracker Furnaces

Low temperature Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology has been successfully retrofitted on ethylene cracking furnaces at Basell GmbH, Germany (6 furnaces) and Shell Nederland Chemie, The Netherlands (2 furnaces). Typical SCR operating temperatures are 350° - 430°F during normal operation with up to 800°F during decoke. The low temperature capability of the Shell SCR technology allowed retrofit installation after the furnace convection section, requiring minimum space, and with no modification or impact on the existing furnaces. Design NOx conversion of over 90% has been achieved with low ammonia slip (less than 5 ppm). This paper will discuss the Shell low temperature SCR technology, the SCR system design criteria, the retrofit installation and operating experience at these two installations.
