Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP (Chevron Phillips Chemical) has been a commercial producer of ethylene since the 1950s and has been considered a leader in acetylene hydrogenation technology for the past 30 years. Chevron Phillips Chemical operates six ethylene plants which include Front End De-ethanizer acetylene converters and Back End acetylene converters. Chevron Phillips Chemical first commercialized its E-Series catalyst BE E-l for the Back End converters at the Port Arthur, Texas plant in 2006. The catalyst is formulated to reduce the green oil fouling and maintain both activity and selectivity throughout the run. The E-Series Back End catalyst has several operational advantages compared to other commercial catalysts: the green oil product is colorless and has a lighter molecular weight, converter run lengths are extended, and the catalyst maintains a higher selectivity. This paper will discuss Chevron Phillips' experience operating the E-Series catalyst in its Back End converters at the Port Arthur Plant and the catalyst development.
