To characterize the adhesion of fibre/matrix interfaces, various conventional micromechanical techniques have been employed, but these yield only qualitativetrends. Soraetimes, these qualitative methods seem not to be relevant to the testing of the composite properties in question. Material designers need to obtain reliable mechanical characteristics so that they can control and predict composite properties by careful design of the fibre-matirx interphase. If the prediction of adhesion cannotbe reliably determined fromthe thermodynamic work of adhesion of the two separate phases (matrix and fibre), then weneed micromechanical tests to reveal the structure-property relationships that controlcompositeproperties. Pull-outtests have been performed toassess fibre-matrixadhesion. Moreover, photoelastic investigations on multifiber model composites have also been carried out with various fibre coatings and fibre-fibre distances to evaluate stress redistribution caused by fibre breaks.
