In the past years, much progress has been made in the elucidation of the structure and function of photosystem II (PS II). However, little is known about how PS II is assembled and which proteins that are not stoichiometric constituents of PS II mayparticipate in this process. Two new genes coding for proteins that may serve as chaperones for PS II assembly and that help maintain PS II function have recently been described (Ermakova-Gerdes and Vermaas, 1999; Kufryk and Vermaas, 2001). The involvement of these products in PS II function was discovered by genetic mapping of secondary mutations in the genome of photoautotrophic Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 pseudorevertants generated from site-directed mutants with functional lesions in PS II.
