The major factor in the deactivation of a platinum-KL-zeolite catalyst is Pt agglomeration during the reforming process. Effective regeneration of the catalyst requires the removal of coke deposit and redistribution of highly dispersed Pt within the KL-zeolite channels. By studying the reaction chemistry occurring between the metal, the support and the reactive gases, O_2, Cl_2 and HCl, we have implemented a regeneration process containing a critical step specially designed for the Pt/KL-zeolite catalyst to prevent Pt reagglomeration during the regeneration process. The regenerated catalyst shows no detectable Pt particles in the TEM and full recovery of or surpassing fresh catalyst activity and selectivity.
