New types of fluorescent lamps that have been recently introduced and are under continuing development employ Hg-Ar discharges at conditions significantly different from those found in conventional fluorescent tubes. In particular, lamps having smali capillary diameters and inductively rf-driven lamps operate at high current densities which extend beyond the range of conditions studied in the classic paper of Koedam et al. Computer models for Hg-Ar discharges have been extensively tested in the regimes commonly used for commercial lighting, but have not been fully validated in this highly loaded regime. Our present work was undertaken to study the radiant output of Hg-Ar discharges over a broad range of operating parameters to obtain data that can be used for validation of the computer models.
