GRADUATING ASSISTANCE TO THE USER IN A MULTIMODAL EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM

This paper is concerned with human-computer communication in educational software designed for language and cognitive training of children, and we focus on two features of communication: multimodality and assistance to the user. Firstly, we analyze several methods from the domains of human-computer interaction, natural language processing and artificial intelligence, and show their relevance to provide assistance to the user; then, for each method, a graduation of the assistance is defined. Secondly, we design a module of human-computer communication implementing these methods and respecting the pedagogic specifications. The EREL system is described: it is an example of such a system, enabling multimodal communication in which natural language expression is privileged, and in which assistance to users is parameterized.
