An inorganic material, monosodium titanate, exhibits good removal characteristics for strontium and several actinides from highly alkaline simulated and actual waste solutions. Actinides removal testing included plutonium, uranium and neptunium. Based on the measured removal rates, preliminary conceptual designs for strontium and actinide removal within salt processing alternatives at the Savannah River Site appear reasonable. Bounding cases for plutonium and neptunium indicate the need for additional sorbent to ensure that the process achieves the waste acceptance criteria for disposal of the decontaminated supernatant liquid. We conclude that sorption data obtained from simulated waste solutions provide reliable predictions for use in facility design and flowsheet modeling studies.
