Current orthopaedic/dental implant materials have failed to produce the ideal bone implant for a variety of reasons, such as mismatch material properties between the implant and the native bone. Traditional materials for such implants have included large (greater than 100 nm) grain sized metals. In an attempt to more closely match the microstructure and mechanical properties of bone (a composite of approximately 30% organic/protein, 65% inorganic/ceramic nanophase material), novel polymerceramic nanocomposite formulations were designed, fabricated, and characterized with respect to their mechanical and cytocompatibility properties.
