New E - Economy : power protection and power availability for the mission critical Internet Data Centers

Although less in the limelight than other aspects of the e-revolution, Internet Data Centers (IDCs) are showing spectacular growth to keep pace with the need for internet connectivity and the increasing volumes of internet-related transactions. An IDC or colocation center is a specially-equipped building designed to host the equipment and services of various internet players: telcos, network owners, carriers, internet and application service providers and customer companies. IDC users can count on web access with a high level of confidentiality, data integrity and availability, while sharing the corresponding costs through a colocation system. Availability and security are essential for such facilities and involve a number of aspects ― data, infrastructure, access control, environmental control and power supply. The availability of the power supply to these sites is particularly vital. New standards are emerging, demanding "six nines" availability for these facilities ― i.e. 99.9999% ― justified by the colossal costs of any power outage. The answer to these challenges is of particular concern to suppliers of UPSs, for they must adapt to the specific requirements of this new market.
