The increase of mesoporosity and micropores is desirable both for the improvement of performance of activated carbon and for the development of its new application fields. Catalytic activation is often used for the production of mesoporous carbon. Pore structure and adsorption capacity of activated carbon made from Taixi anthracite and Datong bituminous by catalytic activation has been investigated. The catalysts for activation (Ni_2O_3 , Fe_2O_3 etc.) are mixed with coal powder. The results indicated that the adsorption capacity of activated carbon was enhanced by catalytic activation. The activated carbon with specific surface up to 1200m~2/g has been obtained. The improvement of adsorption capacities of activated carbon by catalytic activation may be affected by increase in concentration of active sites for dissociation of water vapor.
