A method to estimate the multiple damage state of a laminate is proposed, using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor embedded in the laminate. Preparing the database calculated by damage extension analysis and the waveguide analysis based on coupled-mode theory, the relationship between the damage state and the reflection spectrum of the FBG sensor is represented as some approximated equations by response surface methodology. Solving the inverse problem of the response surfaces, the damage state is estimated from the reflection spectrum obtained in the quasi-static tensile test of a double-edge-notched CFRP cross-ply laminate. The estimated result corresponds well with the actual damage state observed in the experiment.
