We designed a self-etching primer comprised of N-metharylyroyl-co-amino acid, NM omega A. The decalcification aspects of the teeth components by the carboxylic acid in the NM omega A and its effects on the bond strength of resin to tooth were examined. The amount of decalcification by the carboxylic acid in the NM omega A on the hydroxyapatite or dentin was strongly dependent on the pKa value of the carboxylic acid in the NM omega A. However, the bond strengths to both the enamel and dentin were not influenced by the amount of decalcification by the carboxylic acid in the NM omega A. The obtained greater bond strength to dentin than to the enamel was due to differences in the types of adhesion mechanisms, since the NM omega A not only exhibited an etching-efficacy but also had a priming-efficacy to the collagen exposed by the NM omega A conditioning.
