Information and Regularity on Geometric Pattern in Textiles of Cultural Property

In this study, we paid attention to patterns in textiles of cultural properties from the 7~(th) to the 8~(th) century. In particular, patterns of beaded medallions, which are one of geometric patterns, were measured the geometric properties. The representative textiles from the 7~(th) to the 8~(th) century are nishiki and ay a. In this paper, various kinds of weaving techniques of textiles were used as objects. The relationship between the geometric features in patterns of beaded medallions and weaving techniques of textiles were investigated. Information of geometric properties was extracted by using the program developed in this study. Objective patterns of circles were approximated as ovals, and longitudinal radius and transverse radius were calculated. Then the ratio of longitudinal and transverse radius (longitudinal/transverse) and the ratio of transverse radius on outer circle, inner circle, and beaded medallion were calculated. It was observed that deformation of patterns of circles was small about nishiki, and transverse radius was longer than longitudinal about ay a. In both Nishiki and ay a, smaller inner circle and bigger beaded medallions are drawn as the patterns to be simple, according as the weaving techniques are complex. Geometric properties of patterns of beaded medallions were supposed to depend on the weaving techniques.
