The management of multi-dimensional digital images has become routine in biological and medical research laboratories. Still considerable time has to be invested to manage images from the various sources despite the fact that such house keeping operations no longer lead to publishable results. This presentation describes an integrated system for image processing in 3D and 4D light and electron microscopy addressing routine image management operations. Examples of major microscopic acquisition and imaging modes are discussed with respect to the analysis and the visualization of multi-dimensional images. We will present the software Imaris~(TM) Surpass for the interactive visualization of both light and electron micrographs by combining volume and surface rendering techniques. Further emphasis is given on collecting and managing images and parameters from the entire range of image sources which are typically used in biological imaging facilities. Its key strength is to increase efficiency by providing seamless interfaces throughout the imaging chain.
