This paper introduces the architecture and basic components of a system for Interactive Remote Medicine (IRM) that represents a solution for the next generation of medical training and telemedicine applications. The novality of this work comes from the development of a dynamic environment for IRM infrastructure support, the implementation of a novel 3D compression technique that revolutionizes the transfer of 3D data over limited bandwidth networks, making telemedicine applications possible over wireless networks, the introduction of a modular computer vision arid medical image analysis approach for the IRM system implementations, and the adoption of a new interactive remote visualization approach. The effectiveness of the IRM approach is demonstrated in two specific implementations in the head and neck surgery simulation and dental hygiene training.
