Since 1999, The Dow Chemical Company has been exploring the use of high throughput screening techniques for the identification of new catalyst systems for the polymerization of olefins. Included in this effort are the more traditional polymer reaction engineering areas of polymerization kinetics and polymer characterization. The combination of high throughput screening with polymer reaction engineering allows the researcher to obtain a more detailed understanding of the kinetics of a particular catalyst while still at the laboratory scale. These tools also allow a more quantitative understanding of the influence of the reaction conditions on the polymer produced as well as streamline the scale-up of a particular catalyst system.
