In this paper, a systematic approach to control structure selection and controller design using convex numerical optimisation in combination with a suitable parameterisation of all stable closed-loop system is presented. The key benefit is that the designer of the control system can determine the attainable performance and hence the suitability of a control structure without a priori information about the closed-loop behaviour or the controller structure. Thus, it constitutes an effective tool to explore different control structures and to integrate the performance of the controlled plant into the plant optimisation process. In the integrated control structure selection process, robustness properties are screened using the robust performance number as a controllability index. The method is applied to the control structure selection for an air separation plant.
