Geographical knowledge of various Chinese cities is important in many knowledge-intensive computer applications. We have been developing a new method for acquiring this type of knowledge from the Encyclopedia of China. The method consists of three major parts: A City Knowledge Description Language (CKDL) for use by knowledge engineers to formalize the knowledge texts of Chinese cites; a frame-based formalism for representing those cites; and a CKDL compiler for parsing and analyzing the formalized texts into the knowledge frames. In this paper, we present the method in detail and demonstrate its utilities.
