SURFACE TREATMENT OF POLLUTED SEDIMENT IN AN ENERGY PLANTATION

Soils and sediments polluted with mineral oil and PAHs can be bioremediated by landfarming. The landfarming procedure may be used to convert polluted sediment into suitable building material. Landfarming, however, requires many years and a large area of land. Because land is very expensive in the Netherlands, a combination of bioremediation with another profitable use of the land becomes mandatory. The prospect of landfarming, combined with the cultivation of an energy crop (willow), is investigated commercially and technically on an experimental farm by Oostwaardhoeve Co., which has been in business for 5 years, on approximately 15 ha. This paper discusses the state of the art of bioremediation, crop performance, required techniques, and the risks for the environment. In combination with energy crops and with the installation of a power station, this type of bioremediation becomes attached to spatial planning and landscaping. The prospects for the Oostwaardhoeve concept are discussed.
