Underground pollution in rice fields was created following an oil-well blowout due to oil penetrating through a network of existing water infiltration pits. Oil floating on the water table has been distributed in the ground (smear zone) by considerable seasonal water-table movements. These have greatly helped the progress of oxidative oil degradation associated with bioventing. Detailed analyses of oil composition changes over time confirm preferred bio-degradation of lighter and linear petroleum hydrocarbons down to at least seven meters.
