APPLICATION OF SURFACE ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES IN THE INVESTIGATION OF COATING METALLURGICAL PROBLEMS

High strength steel (HSS) hot-dip galvanising remains somewhat difficult, due to particular surface condition and reactivity problems immediately after recrystallisation annealing. The question was addressed by performing surface and interface analyses on both simply annealed and galvanised specimens. It was thus shown that oxidising pre-treatments could alter the surface condition and help better control the coating-substrate interface.
