Molecular genetic analysis of quantitative trait loci related to rice grain quality

This study was conducted to analyze quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for grain quality. Recombinant inbred lines (RILs) were developed by the single-seed descent method of progenies derived from a cross between a japonica tongil hybrid cultivar, Nonganbyeo, and an indica line, BG276. The 272 F_7 individuals were used for DNA analysis using simple sequence repeat (SSR) and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. The molecular linkage map of the QTLs related to grain quality was determined. A total of 15 significant QTLs governing six characters were detected with a variation of one to four QTLs for the respective characters. However, no significant QTL was detected for grain length. Two QTLs for grain width were identified on chromosomes1 and 8, four QTLs for grain thickness on chromosomes 3,7,8, and 11, and two QTLs for grain length/width ratio on chromosomes 5 and 10, respectively. A total of four QTLs for alkali digestion value were detected on chromosomes 3, 7,8, and 11 and three QTLs for amylose content on chromosomes 1,6, and 11.
