Pollutants emitted from indoor materials/products affect indoor air quality in buildings. Current studies of building material emissions focus on measuring emissions using small-scale environmental chambers. Appropriate models are needed to interpret the emission data and to transform the data from small-scale chambers to buildings. This paper reviews the potentiality of different models in transforming the emission data. In general, empirical models and simplified mass transfer models do not allow scaling the results from small-scale chambers to buildings. Comprehensive mass transfer models that address the physical impact of both external (environmental) and internal factors on emissions are promising. However, use of these models is currently hindered by the high computing cost and lack of material properties (diffusion coefficient and partition coefficient). Research focused on the accurate measurements of these properties is highly needed.
