Leak detection in pressurized pipes by means of wavelet analysis

In a companion paper [1] the harmonic analysis is used to evaluate differences in pressure signals in the frequency domain for intact and damaged single pipe systems. Limits of this approach have been pointed out. On the contrary, in this paper the pressure signal during transients is analyzed using the wavelet transform and leak detection by means of transient analysis and wavelet transform is discussed. Results of an experimental investigation carried out at the Water Engineering Laboratory of the University of Perugia, Italy, are used for the discussion. Conclusions are that the proposed method can be used for leak detection in simple systems.
