Effect of washing on oil and water resistance of fluorocarbon resin-treated cotton is reported. Loss of performance has previously been attributed to a decrease in fluorine atom concentration at the surface of the fibres. Atomic force microscopy in combination with spectromechanical techniques is used to demonstrate that fluorocarbon resin can undergo macroscopic de-wetting on textile fibres.
