This paper proposes a fuzzy-based control strategy for leveling electric power fluctuations in railroad substations. The power control system using an SMES (superconducting magnetic energy storage) installed in the electric railroad substation absorbs energy from the ac source line when no electric car runs and discharges energy when the railroad substation must supply high electric power to electric cars. The proposed control strategy is based on fuzzy reasoning, in which fuzzy rules are applied to the current fluctuating pattern and the energy stored in the SMES. The reduction in the rated capacity of electric installations and power loss is evaluated. The energy capacity of SMES and the scaling factor in fuzzy reasoning are discussed.
